We believe in innovation and the promotion of new technologies. That’s why we are at the forefront of new trends in the world of APIs. And this same vision has our Partner Mulesoft, which in the past made different APIs Predictions that in 2022 became a reality.

Based on a series of specialized podcasts from our partner Mulesoft, we will show some interesting ideas that could continue to empower Epidata’s API development in 2023. For this reason, you will discover how the APIs market evolved according to Mulesoft. Read on!

6 APIs Predictions from 2022 that you need to know

The Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) economy is continuing to evolve to meet new expectations, and as the year soon comes to a close, let’s take a look back at what Matt and Mike (hosters of the Mulesoft podcast) foresaw for the year with their top 6 biggest and boldest API predictions yet.

1. GraphQL will not replace REST

While GraphQL is not a wholesale replacement for REST, we see more GraphQL daily in some most creative use cases. From PayPal and Netflix to Shopify and GitHub, companies are leveraging GraphQL to either limit run time, use it on the backend, or leverage it as a development tool, and this type of pre-production use is only going to increase throughout the year.

Graph QL isn’t going away by any means. As organizations find more flexible and creative uses, the role and influence of GraphQL will continue to change and evolve toward a more emergent design.

2. API retailers will take over the API economy

Although “flux capacitor” is a dated ‘80s cultural reference, this trend has grown exponentially over time as companies start tapping into the API intermediation space and adapting the idea of an API retailer. Companies are retailing APIs out the front and aggregating their wholesale APIs in the back, taking full advantage of APIs in the app economy.

Companies like Twilio, Stripe, and Plaid are already leading the charge for retailing their services as they continue to accelerate time to market by developing coverage models that bring more value. By building similar coverage models and enabling other companies out the front door, companies can mix and match different APIs from their organization, plus key APIs in their sector.

3. APIs developers won’t be “developers” anymore

It’s no secret that we are in the low-code, no-code era, and it’s not going away anytime soon. As a result, the API developers doing the work won’t be “developers” anymore. Last year, it was all about RPA, and now we’re actively refocusing on the visual designer strategy and seeing more production in the low-code, no-code arena.

Although there’s a small group of developers who are still building, there’s still a mass of non-developers seeking an easier and more intuitive method of development. To do this, organizations must lower the barrier, expand access to APIs, and put them in the hands of the teams doing the work. Whether it’s HR, finance, sales, or marketing, the key is to get more people involved.

4. There will be at least one API security breach

This may be one of the boldest predictions of the episode, but there’s going to be at least one API security breach this year. That’s right, it’s inevitable. However, on the other side of the coin, this is the year everyone will wake up to the importance of API security. Many organizations produce APIs and under their platforms, they may still benefit from the security and security measures, but there’s still the issue of misunderstanding and underestimating APIs as the gateway into the organization.

Regarding APIs, it’s critical to rebuild, revisit and be prepared to detect, prevent, and remediate threats across the organization. This idea that you can’t manage what you can’t see is the same thing as you can’t secure what you can’t see. So taking time to create a real-time digital model of what’s going on in your systems and knowing what’s coming out of your spaces not only has operational benefits but security benefits as well.

5. There’s no APIs without AI

It’s plain and simple. Soon you won’t be able to spell, say, or think about APIs without artificial intelligence (AI). AI is constantly embedded into what we do, and thus, we’re starting to see an intersection between the world of APIs and AI. Some organizations are still learning to apply AI to their data and models, while others are setting up their models as an API like GPT-3.

However, with APIs at the front door of most machine-learning models, it’s important to factor in the risks of AI usage across the organization. Although there is a steady shift towards AI, this intersection is still new as a lot is going on in the AI space that we still need to explore.

6. CEOs will be API experts

To close this episode of bold API predictions, it’s safe to assume that CEOs will soon be a part of the API conversation. Lately, we’ve seen more senior leadership actively and enthusiastically driving the discussion around API strategy. It’s time CEOs were also in the room. As our entire world continues to shift towards digital, the role of APIs in business, customer and employee experiences, partnerships, and sales are exponential. It’s important that C-suite leaders not only understand how APIs can help drive their digital strategy but see the value of APIs across the organization.

How do we work with these innovations at Epidata?

In addition, at Epidata we have made developments following some of MuleSoft’s predictions. For example, we believe that CEOs are already part of the decision-making process. Thus, board members often discuss APIs, contributing their points of view, as was the case with Real or Familia Bercomat.

Likewise, Epidata also supports the innovation proposed by our partner MuleSoft in our Software Architecture & Apps Integrations area. One example occurred with Atrium, which was looking for a value proposition for the ongoing support and maintenance of MuleSoft.

In this development, we were able to enhance their connectors with their CRM, ERP, and eCommerce platform. In consequence, we were able to make a complete integration. Thanks to this APIs innovation work, they became one of Epidata’s success stories.

Finally, you have already seen some of the API predictions that our partner MuleSoft mentioned for 2022. Many of them we have implemented in Epidata developments, so we invite you to learn more about Software our Architecture & Apps Integrations area

The API deployed by MuleSoft is now reused by more than 10 MIT departments and what took 6 weeks to build, has now saved more than 1 year of duplicate development effort. Discover how MuleSoft’s management with MIT is a representation of Epidata’s mission. (*)

Epidata is present in several countries around the world and has extensive experience in developing innovative projects with corporate clients. For these reasons, the partnership with MuleSoft seeks to jointly drive innovation in workspaces and academic sectors, providing clients with state-of-the-art solutions that allow them to adapt to the challenges of security, scalability and technological transformation of work in the software era. Within this framework, the management of MuleSoft with MIT is an example of how Epidata reflects its mission through the activity of its partners.

Mulesoft with MIT: context

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) prides itself on its long history of innovation. A few years back they realized a lot of university processes like registering for housing, paying tuition, and checking grades were not innovative at all.

When MIT began exploring how to translate these services into new web and mobile channels and decentralize access from Information Services & Technology, they feared opening their financial and student systems to outside requests would introduce significant risk. That’s where they realized they needed an API strategy.

Information Services & Technology now provides a reusable set of APIs available to students, faculty, staff, and affiliates through their self-service MIT Developer Connection portal. The idea is to open up MIT’s institutional data in a way that’s easily consumable yet governed – fostering the next wave of innovation out of MIT’s Cambridge campus and beyond.

Introduction of MIT

MIT set out on an ambitious 2020 IT vision to transform IT and deliver a world-class student experience. However, MIT’s Central IT team found that the constraints of meeting “keep the lights on” IT meant that it did not have the capacity to meet new initiatives such as a “cloud-first” systems modernization initiative.

The Goal

In order to deliver the 2020 vision given these resource constraints, MIT’s Information Services & Technology team sought to first transform itself, from a delivery channel for the 11,000+ students and 1,000+ faculty that rely on its services, to an enabler that would allow university departments and IT teams to self-serve. The goal was to expand Information Services & Technology delivery capacity by distributing IT delivery capability to other teams through building a set of reusable APIs.

MuleSoft’s Intervention

Through partnering with MuleSoft and adopting MuleSoft’s API-led connectivity approach, MIT has built out a microservices architecture exposing 8 public APIs (such as Courses, Classrooms, and People). The reuse of the APIs has driven significant productivity increases. For example, the People API provides basic directory information about students, staff, and MIT affiliates. This API is now reused by more than 10 MIT departments and what took 6 weeks to build, has now saved more than 1 year of duplicate development effort. This has freed up the IT team to move resources from ‘Keep the lights on IT’ to delivering on the innovative new projects that comprise the Project 2020 vision.

Discover how MuleSoft’s management with Coca-Cola is a representation of Epidata’s mission. (*)

Within the framework of our search for innovative proposals, and in a constant evolution that seeks to incorporate the best technologies, Epidata sees MuleSOft as a strategic partner to continue its mission of facilitating innovation for companies. In line with innovation, in addition to doing integrations, Epidata is part of a select team of partners that assist in developing projects that evolve this tool.

Context about MuleSoft and Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola strived to deliver innovative customer-focused initiatives. Yet, as IT faced more digital projects, its disjointed architecture made accessing data difficult. They relied on legacy data centers that were challenging to access and connect. To streamline this process, they adopted a cloud-first strategy. IT has focused on self-service access, providing integration templates that its 250+ bottlers can use. This focus has enabled mobile applications for sales teams and a “Smart” Cooler leveraging real-time data. IT has improved the customer experience while cutting delivery timelines from months to weeks.

Introduction

Coca-Cola, selling 1.9 billion global servings a day, wanted to stay at the forefront of innovation both for its retail customers and individual consumers. As demands from the business to roll out new digital initiatives continued to climb, IT found itself struggling to provide access to the necessary data for different lines of business to use for new projects. As more initiatives were planned, IT realized their current architecture was rooted in disjointed data and handcuffed them, causing project backlog to grow, pushing out development deadlines.

The team decided to close out their data centers and adopt a cloud-first strategy, with the hope of introducing self-service and reusable assets to establish a more future-state architecture. They decided on MuleSoft to enable an API-led approach. This has allowed them to decouple their data sources while standardizing on reusable templates that their 250+ bottlers could leverage and customize. They’ve since enabled lines of businesses and bottlers to self-serve and build good portions of projects on their own – thus eliminating bottlenecks by federating the work to where the expertise exists.

IT is now delivering projects routinely in ¼ of the time (12 weeks to 3 weeks) and can onramp a new developer in just 3 weeks (what previously took 2.5 months). The sales team is now equipped with a mobile application that acts as a single point of real-time data to effectively manage their customer relationships. They’ve also developed new IoT projects around creating smart coolers which provide analytics to rapidly enrich and combine structured and unstructured data sets, thus providing better customer experience and analyzing consumer behavior to promote new products and services. All of this is built on MuleSoft’s unified runtime for Hybrid Integrations and APIs on one single platform.

About Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola, one of the world’s most iconic brands ever, maintains its same mission 125 years later: to “open happiness.” Today there are 1.9 billion servings of Coca-Cola Company products served every day. Distributing this overwhelming amount of product requires the company to rely on an ecosystem of bottlers and distributors, with over 250 of them operating on 5 continents. Now, Coca-Cola has evolved from the glass bottled beverage it once was to a global brand, with consumers engaging across multiple digital channels which are changing rapidly as technology evolves.

  • In order to engage with consumers and keep up with demands, Coca-Cola needed to digitize its process and create new products to interact with customers.
  • They needed better data and analytics around customer behavior, for example, IoT enabled coolers to track customer usage, digital dispensers, personalization through digital interaction (Freestyle machines), etc.
  • Coca-Cola has embarked on their digital journey to engage customers and connect with them in ways they never have before.

Desired Outcomes

  • Engaging retail customers through informed sales teams – needed a single application platform for the sales team to manage effective customer relationship management.
  • Launch mobile and dispenser-level digital experiences for consumers.
  • Provide analytics to rapidly enrich and combine structured and unstructured data sets of customers, consumers and business processes to provide better customer experience, and analyze consumer behavior to promote new products, promotions and services.

Challenges

  • Disjointed data impacted the ability of sales to be responsive to and thrill their retail customers.
  • T was unable to keep up with business demand to roll out digital initiatives – mobile, digital dispensers, and IoT within coolers and the fleet.
  • Increasing demand for all front-office applications to be mobile-ready.
  • The Coca-Cola Company has over 250 bottling partners worldwide, the largest,
  • Coca-Cola Bottling Investment Group (BIG) employs over 100,000 people. IT struggled to meet the demands of the business, and rolling out these digital initiatives proved even more difficult with various regional demands.

Solution

  1. Driving digital transformation internally across central organization: The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) selected MuleSoft as their unified platform for SOA, SaaS and API development. By building reusable common services, APIs and templates, they saw a speed increase of 2X.
  2. 2014 ($100K ARR)
  3. Increasing sales productivity with bottlers: Bottling Investment Group (BIG) was the first bottling group to adopt MuleSoft to increase sales productivity. Connecting various backend systems to Salesforce gives the field access to all customer’s (retailers) information on their mobile devices. Bottlers are achieving 2-4X increased speed by going from Webmethods on-prem to MuleSoft Cloud due to reuse and lower maintenance requirements. Piloted first Freestyle machine with connectivity – customer preferences are monitored and uploaded to machines to make the experience more personal.
  4. 2015 ($1M ARR)
  5. Internal operational effectiveness
  6. Connecting Concur, and Salesforce to other internal systems. Also got CloudHub ready for all of Coca-Cola with reusable APIs/templates. Mule in Action:

Story 1: When a Coca-Cola sales associate walks into a retailer to negotiate a quarterly or monthly buy, all the information they need in terms of current inventory, pricing offers, historical buying patterns – anything they need to have an informed discussion with the customer – is readily available on the associates mobile phone or tablet. This is a Coca-Cola Bottler’s digital transformation for improving internal operations.

Story 2: At any dispensing location, when a customer walks up to a Freestyle machine they can choose from hundreds of different dispense options, creating a personal selection, blended in real-time. The customer can interact with the machine based on their previous consumption habits and Coca-Cola learns more about the customer.

Results

  1. IT:
  2. 4x faster; Coca-Cola is delivering projects routinely in 3 weeks rather than 12 weeks.
  3. 3.3x faster to onramp new developers; what used to take 2.5 months, now takes 3 weeks with MuleSoft.
  4. Almost a year’s worth of man-days saved (336 days) on managing applications; what used to take 18 days to support a new application, now takes 4 days with MuleSoft.
  5. Business:
  6. Deliver hybrid integration and APIs on one unified iPaaS: Anypoint Platform
  7. Launch Common Service Interface Program to build reusable and consistent APIs to be leveraged by the global bottler community.

But this will not be possible without an adequate application integration strategy and software architecture, which are the enablers to gain agility and innovation”. About the award itself, he added: “This award is very important and we are very happy to have received such recognition because it considers our knowledge and ability to execute —two of our company’s key values—, but also because it speaks of how our close relationship with Salesforce and Mulesoft has resulted in many successful implementations throughout the region. What is truly important is that this award recognizes our commitment to innovation, which has no boundaries, and where Mulesoft solutions are a fundamental stepping stone towards the development of agile, innovative and efficient technologies that we pursue at Epidata. MuleSoft is one of the tools we use to be the link between the user and innovation“. MuleSoft is, globally, the number one integration platform and API that empowers IT and business users. In 2013, Epidata became one of the first three MuleSoft partners in the region, offering all the services necessary for its successful implementation, including architecture assessment and definition, consulting, training and coaching, and project support and migration.

Epidata’s history with MuleSoft dates back a long time. In 2015, for example, Epidata became its partner in the United States, thus achieving an even greater positioning in the industry, opening the door to new customers and projects internationally. Then in 2018 and 2021 Epidata participated in MuleSoft CONNECT, one of the most important integration events worldwide attended by leading industry speakers. Looking ahead, Epidata specialists will continue to work closely with MuleSoft to deliver disruptive solutions and transform industry-leading companies.

We are conducting our training programs for the management and use of technologies that are highly demanded in the labor market.

The program was aimed at systems engineering students in their third or higher year of college who have an advanced level of english and a computer with internet access.

The very first edition using this format was held in September and focused on virtual machines and integration support. The technologies taught in the course were mainly related to Mulesoft, but also included tools such as Gitlab, Postman and others related to integration technologies. Common development practices and elements related to the life cycle of system projects were also taught.

Courses are two weeks long, 3 hours long classes per day. To participate, those interested must pass different stages of selection such as a group interview with game dynamics, a technical interview and an English evaluation.

The course included lectures given by experts in different technologies, and the students’ execution of a final systems integration simulation project, developed in teams, integrating all of the knowledge acquired with a simulation of a real job.

At the beginning of 2020, an edition of this program, in which 17 students also participated, was conducted in person and focused on JAVA programming.

The pandemic forced us to adapt this plan to the remote mode. We believe that in this context it becomes more important than ever to promote the insertion of more people in the labour market, providing them with the necessary knowledge to increase their chances of having a new job in a few days. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has indicated that young people will be the most affected work wise by this crisis.

Currently, we have more than 70 active global searches in the areas of development, administration, account managers, pre-sales and selection, among others.
