RESTful APIs: Design for modern web applications

Objective

Explore the design and specification principles of RESTful interfaces, and incorporate useful tools such as Swagger and Postman.

Content

Unit 1: Interface design principles

  • Interfaces and APIs.
  • Resources: operations, events, and properties.
  • Interfaces as contracts.
  • Interface separation.
  • Design principles.
  • Strategies for interface design.
  • Types of APIs.
  • Interaction styles.
  • Data formats.
  • Versioning, deprecation, extension.

Unit 2: RESTfulness

  • RESTfulness. REST design principles.
  • HTTP. Methods (verbs).
  • Defining endpoints: resources and actions.
  • Good and bad practices.
  • Error handling. Error codes.
  • Authentication.
  • Other standard headers.
  • Practice: given a scenario, define the endpoints a REST API should have.

Unit 3: Tools for specifying and designing REST APIs

  • API documentation. The importance of documentation.
  • Specification.
  • Description languages for REST APIs. OpenAPI.
  • Swagger.
  • Postman.
  • Practice: continue the previous unit's exercise by writing its specification.

Skills developed

  • help participants expand their knowledge of what APIs are, their importance, and how RESTful APIs work based on REST principles.
  • help participants become familiar with the different HTTP request methods, such as GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, etc., and how they are used to interact with resources in a RESTful API.
  • provide specific skills and knowledge to facilitate the effective creation and documentation of REST-based APIs.
